Maternity Clothes

As you can see from the ticker on my sidebar, I’m expecting my first grandchild in a few months! My son and his girlfriend are expecting their little bundle of joy in August. Rachel has reached the point that maternity clothes are needed. We have been out in the shops looking at them, and were shocked at the prices.  So, I got to work! Rachel gave me a few of her tee’s that she has outgrown, and I turned them into maternity tops. It is soo easy and economical, and I wish I had thought of it when I was pregnant with my kids.

All I did was measure down to just under her bust, and cut off the top portion of the tee. I then took a large men’s tee and cut it off under the arms, which I gathered and and sewed to the top of the other tee. Creating a ‘skirt’ so to speak. They fit perfectly, and she will get alot of wear out of them. She will even be able to wear them after the baby is born. You’ll have to forgive the crappy pictures. The batteries in my camera are getting low, so they didn’t turn out too wonderful. But, you’ll get the idea.

The pinks don’t match perfectly on this one, but they aren’t quite as different as they look in the picture. I figure that after a few washes it won’t be as noticeable.

This one is better.

and the back. I added ribbon ties because it was a little big.

And although it doesn’t look like it on the hanger, this one is the nicest. It is a beautiful aqua colour on the bottom. (can you see that the batteries were getting worse? lol) I like the ruffles on this one. I will be making a black one exactly the same. Hopefully we’ll get some warmer weather so she can wear them! Can you believe it snowed again today? I am so tired of winter weather!!

My next project(s)(there will probably be more than one, lol) will be a sweater/jacket for her. I’ll use Simplicity #2374. I have some nice soft knit picked out.

I also have two other patterns I will be making up for her once she has chosen the fabric.

Butterick #’s 5196, and 4201.

They will both be quick, easy sews, so Rachel’s maternity wardrobe will be well on it’s way! Up next… Baby Clothes!!

I’m So Embarrassed……..

All I can say is that the lovely sunshine and warmer weather has addled my brain.  Last night I received an email from the lovely Julia and Cori at Blue eyed Blessings, letting me know that I had been chosen to co-host their fun blog party on Wednesday!  Well… for some strange reason, I thought last night was Wednesday evening, and I had missed it!  So, I sent Julia and Cori an email apologising for missing the party. I even went so far as to check out their site, to see what I had missed.  Imagine my surprise when I couldn’t find the party at all!  At that point I thought, ok, maybe I’m not the only one who missed it. (Ok, maybe I was just hoping…) Fast forward to this morning.  (Yes, today is actually Wednesday)  I popped over to Blue Eyed Blessings, just to see what was going on.  And… my stomach dropped. There was the party. Needless to say, I feel like a complete fool. I can only imagine what Julia and Cori thought when they read my email.  (I’m seriously considering hiding under a rock..)   The only good thing is, I didn’t miss the party! I want to thank Julia and Cori for choosing me to co-host this week. (and I better enjoy it, because with my track record, I don’t think there will be many more offers coming my way, lol)  Pop on over to Blue Eyed Blessings and check out their fun site, and see the awesome bows they have in their etsy shop.  And now, on to the party!  Make sure to link up your blog and online shop, visit other blogs and shops, and have fun!

Spring Flowers

Well, I got tired of waiting for Spring, so I decided to make some for myself! Er, well, sort of.  After seeing so many beautiful headbands and other hair accessories all over blogland, I decided to try my hand at it.  Michael’s had their silk flowers on sale this week, so in my usual all or nothing approach to crafting, I stocked up. I think I can safely say that everyone I know will never be without a floral headband. Ever. Again. But, at least I have the pleasure of my own private garden blooming in my basement. And I don’t have to water them! (we all know my reputation with plants. R.I.P )  I was actually surprised at the quality of the flowers available these days.  I haven’t really looked at them closely in years, not since the wonderful plastic flowers of yesteryear that passed as ‘silk’ blooms. When someone mentions silk flowers, I automatically think of the poor dusty specimens that seem to bloom endlessly in thrift stores and yard sales. So, needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the vast selection. After a very happy hour of ‘picking flowers’, I left the store with my own life time supply. I didn’t realize how much fun making headbands and clippies (ugh, the ‘clippies’ are another story!) would be. The almost instant gratification has me hooked.  I’m excited by all the possibilities there are for embellishment and types of bands I can create! The possibilities are virtually endless, and I intend to try as many as I can think up!  For now I’ve experimented with different elastics for the bands, and ways of attaching the flowers to the bands. These are the first of many creations, all of which I’ve listed in my Etsy shop.

Isn’t this sequined elastic fabulous?

Another elastic variation. Who knew there were so many choices?

I love these little clippies. The crystal bead in the center adds just the right touch. I searched everywhere for these alligator clips. I mean EVERYWHERE!  I thought they would be easy to find, considering their popularity in blogland (and other) crafting circles. But no. After looking at several different drug stores, craft and fabric/sewing stores, and even Walmart and not finding any, I was about to give up.  I ordered some from a shop on Etsy and resigned myself to waiting for a few days. Which I hate to do when the crafting bug is upon me. Then I happened to run into a store for something totally unrelated, and there they were! They were beckoning me from across the aisle, just waiting for my hot little hands to snatch them up. (which is exactly what I did. They weren’t getting away from me!) I bought all three packages they had. So I should be fine until the others arrive from Etsy. ( Whew. I knew you were worried! )

So, stay tuned for many more of my exciting versions of headbands, clippies, and whatever other hair accessory creations I can come up with!

Happy crafting ladies!!
