First Project
After writing my post yesterday, I got down to business and did some sewing. I wanted to make something from my new book, but there are so many great things in it, I had a hard time deciding. I finally settled on a cute little hat, complete with ears. And of course, in my usual fashion, I couldn't make just one! I have several pieces of knit fabric suitable for the project, all in baby prints. The hat itself is incredibly easy to make, and didn't take very long. The thing that took the longest was the applique. They are just little inner ear pieces, and should be easy to do, but naturally, I had to make it difficult. First, I haven't got any stitch witchery, to apply the applique to the ears. I have never even seen it in the stores around here. I'm sure we have something similar, I just haven't found it yet. Anyway, to keep the applique bits in place while sewing, I ended up attaching them to the ears with hem tape, just to keep them still while sewing around them. Unfortunately, this does nothing to stop the edges of the applique bits from fraying after sewing. Just to stop them from unraveling to the stitching, I put some fray stop around the edges. It seems to have helped. Let me say, sewing around these little bits and keeping the stitching neat and even is no easy feat. Especially for a first timer like me! Hopefully I will improve as time goes on, and I do more projects. Although my little hats turned out cute, they will be going in the 'trial run' pile. And, as you can see, I was severely limited in my selection of models, so both hats are being modeled for you by a seemly headless teddy bear. Honestly, he didn't seem to mind......

I love them! I saw one a few weeks ago and thought about making a couple. Yours are so cute! I love the pooh one. I'd wear it! lol
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable! Amanda is right, Wonder Under is awesome! You can also get "Heat n Bond," which is the same thing, just a different brand. They sell it at my local Wal-Mart (that way you don't have to wait for it to be shipped to you).
ReplyDeleteAlso, I do a zig-zag stitch at the edge of any appliques, and I think it gives it a more "finished" look. You have to play with how wide you want the zig-zag, and how close together you want the stitches (on a scrap of fabric).
Found you through NFF, and will be following your cute blog!
